Heapnokovich, Munich 1972 explores my fantasy of being a member of the triumphant Soviet women’s gymnastic team at the 1972 Munich Olympics. I have attempted to re-enact various “historical” moments that occurred during the competition through the (time travel) “vehicle” of multiple photo shoots at a Vancouver gymnastics club. Heapnokovich, Munich 1972 consists of a series of eleven black and white photographs of myself (performing as the fictitious athlete Veritsa Heapnokovich) on the beam, floor and bars wearing replicas of the official Soviet team leotards and CCCP tracksuit. This work functions as my own personal (cherished, yet ludicrous) desire to be part of elite gymnastics history. On a deeper level it examines and problematizes French Situationist Guy Debord’s concept of how fantasy works as a slave within capitalist society.
