Many of my creations are self-reflective and relate to my tribal group. Other inspirations include our collective history in this country. Additionally, social justice coupled with being marginalized by mainstream society who has dictated what is ‘normal and not normal’ in First Nations art, also known as ‘splitting’ by cultural theorists, discourages but also inspires me. I believe this strategy has stymied the natural progression of aboriginal artistic practice. My reaction to this demands that I work as honestly and courageously as possible by creating what I feel and think is right, despite being marginalized. Many times I just need to breathe and feel free of all of this so I create work inspired by my territory and my ancestors. In spite of this situation, I believe that as an aboriginal artist, I am involved in our artistic renaissance, which is very, very exciting to me.
