I am interested in the visual and emotional clash that is created when combining two diametrically opposed subjects and/or events.
The combination of surgery and food is one such example. When these two worlds crash the result is disquieting to say the least.
Surgical imagery conjures feelings of discomfort, if not repulsion, for many people. Surgery itself is a situation that we are familiar with but rarely take part in willingly. When we do, we are left exposed and vulnerable to our fears.
Food, on the other hand, is usually a warm and comfortable experience that brings about feelings of pleasure to most. It is used not only to sustain the body but is often offered as a reward to relax and appease us.
When combined these two situations result in an uncomfortable, yet fascinating, visceral experience that we just can’t seem to look away from.
