My work explores feminism, race, sexuality, gender and queer issues. Most often, I use myself as the focus of the subject matter. In the making of Reconstructed Gender Construct, I create a character of ambivalent gender, performing a grooming ritual that is commonly associated with maleness. The viewer is denied the reassurance of being able to assume the character’s gender, subverting assumptions about gender and appearance. I created the work using Polaroid emulsion lift technique. I reconstructed the figure, creating a collage of overlapping images. I would like to trigger the viewer to ask questions, provoke conversation and at the same time, inspire deeper awareness.
