Jaime Lauren’s current photographic practice involves an exploration of communities and cultures, both foreign and familiar. In 2006, Jaime traveled throughout Morocco as an intern photographer for a media centre based in Spain. From the modern capital of Rabat to the medieval city of Fes, from the Middle Atlas mountains to the seething souqs of Marrakech, and beyond into the Sahara, Jaime explored the country collecting stories and photographs that reflected her experiences within the Moroccan culture.
In Fes el-Bali, modern and medieval ways of life flow simultaneously through the labyrinth of narrow alleys and small squares, yet the intensity of the light and mystique of the shadows evokes that sense of timelessness which seems to linger throughout all of Morocco.
Jaime is currently producing a photographic series based on community life at the Menno Simons Centre, a church-subsidized dormitory for Christian students located in Point Grey, Vancouver.
