With the 2010 Olympic Winter Games approaching, the city officials are doing everything they can to disguise what the Downtown Eastside has become. The city has begun “restoration” projects which destroy the original historic buildings just to replace them with glass and steel condos. I saw what was happening and wanted to act quickly to preserve a part of the city. My interests in design, typography, and lettering led me to the conclusion that I should document the lettering and use it as the basis for a typeface. This poster is intended to be a specimen of the typeface that resulted from sampling the hand generated lettering located throughout the Downtown Eastside.
