For this semester-long thesis project, I was asked to research and “solve” a problem of the 21st Century. Having recently been intrigued by a commercial about Canada’s “touch deficit,” I decided to explore the reasons why Canadians are a little awkward about affection. The final phase of my project, a series of touch t-shirts, uses the rhetorical space of the shirt to politely ask for more touch. By suggesting that the wearer has gone out of their way to “wear this extra soft shirt today” in the hopes of receiving a hug, the shirt illuminates the absurdity of our perceptions; it breaks the barrier between two people and creates an excuse to connect.
